I first learnt about the actual benefits of goji berries a couple of months ago; and although I had heard of them before, I had not really paid that much attention to them. Overlooking the huge advantages, and also presuming that those little red berries, that look like a cross between a raisin and a cranberry, were an expensive superfood.
Yet I could not have been more wrong! Not only had I underestimated the health benefits but also how cheap they are.
What is so great about them?
They are packed with Vitamin A and C
They are good for the immune system
Goji berries contain one of the highest amounts of beta carotene which is not only vital for good eye health and vision but also for our skin, promoting elasticity to help keep skin firmer.
They can help improve liver function
Another great thing about goji berries is that they are known to help with depression and anxiety, so much so they are often referred to as a happy fruit.
Goji berries can also help maintain healthy blood sugar levels and balance blood pressure, but like with anything, if you are taking any medication, always check with your doctor first.
They are packed with plenty of beneficial amino acids and antioxidants including one called Zeaxanthin which can help decrease the chance of cataracts or glaucoma.
Goji berries can even aid sleep, with studies showing they can increase melatonin and help you get a better nights rest.
I have been eating goji berries almost daily, mainly sprinkled over cereal, and I am pleased to say that I have actually noticed an improvement in my sleep.
The other good thing about goji berries is that, for a superfood, they are not really expensive and you can get a bag of them in supermarkets for £1.50.
The other plus is that they are so light that there are heaps in each packet.
So they do last, even if like me you are having them daily.
What can you eat them with?
They can be sprinkled over salads, breakfast cereal and even yogurt.
Used in casseroles or soups and of course popped into smoothies.
They are also great to have for a snack and hopefully an alternative to help stop reaching for those biscuits.
