Why St Ives is a Great Alternative to Going Overseas this Year

An Image of St Ives taken with a drone

With foreign travel being so uncertain at the moment, and constantly changing rules and restrictions, St Ives in Cornwall could be a great alternative for a holiday.

Often thought of as the most beautiful town in Cornwall, I can certainly see why.

The stunning beaches could easily be mistaken for an overseas destination.

The first time I visited I was so surprised to discover just how clean and blue the sea truly is. Clearer than some countries I had been.  To be honest I couldn’t quite get over it, despite hearing about them, I had not expected them to be so beautiful. You are also spoilt for choice as there are five.

From the long stretch of sand and calmer waters at Porthminster to the delightful little cove of Porthgwidden, this little beach was a favourite of mine and particularly reminiscent of Greece.  There is also the surfers hub of  Porthmeor, which took me back to my days in Australia, as I watched the skilled surfers ride the waves.

Added to the mix is the harbour beach and there is also a tiny cove named Bamaluz Beach.

Just outside of town is sandy Carbis Bay which is generally quieter and can be reached by a pleasant coastal walk.

An Image of a cobbled street

There are plenty of things to do including many water sports; plus an abundance of places to visit in the surrounding area if you want to explore further afield.

St Ives in particular, but also many other Cornish villages, have pretty, cobbled, winding streets and white washed houses, which to me, gave a look and somewhat feel about it of Greece.

It is a delight to wander around the maze of streets where you will discover plenty of restaurants, cafes and not to be missed enticing Cornish bakeries.

There are ornate fishermans cottages, most available to rent, and interesting but not tacky gift shops.  A few of these lined with surf boards outside, again adding to that overseas feel.

There are artsy shops and even a Tate Gallery.

The town is a backdrop to a charming harbour filled with fishing boats, where quayside, alfresco restaurants add to the ambience.

You can often find people enjoying the view as they sit on the quay, feet dangling over the edge eating icecreams, baked goods or fish and chips.

In the evening you can admire  the amazing sunset in either one of the award winning beach restaurants or on the pretty grassy hill overlooking Porthmeor Beach

With its very own train station you don’t even need to use a car and can stay outside of town where costs are cheaper. Or alternatively take the coastal walk into town, both offer stunning views.

So if you are looking for a place in the UK with an overseas feel then St Ives could be the ideal choice.
